Monday June 15, 2009 - Custom Vs. Template-Based
In today's market, we are finding it harder and harder to stay competitive with lower end web design companies. Not that we're bragging and stating we are high end, but when it comes to the quality of the sites we produce, we can say several things confidently:
- All of our sites are 100% custom
- We do not use ANY website building tools, ensuring our customers' sites are maintainable in the long term
- Our customers are provided with all image, flash, and website files with site delivery
- All of our sites INCLUDE basic SEO!
- We facilitate content composition for all of our clients who require it, FREE OF CHARGE!
Ask around, not many companies are offering the same level of service. Coincidentally, their websites ARE CHEAPER, much cheaper. Why? Let's face it, if you're getting a full 5-page site for under $1000, your site will mostly likely look like client X who they conned into thinking they were getting a custom site too!
We are noticing that many contacts we get nowadays are just "shopping around". Clients want to get prices without meeting us, or telling us in detail what their requirements are. Shopping based on price may work for fruits and vegetables. Seriously, if an apple looks ripe, feels firm, and is in fact an apple, paying less for it won't necessarily mean that it's of lower quality. With websites, quite the opposite is true. A custom website is quite a bit more effort to produce, is fully customized to meet the client's needs, and is much more highly maintainable in the long-run. Templated sites look like the other templated sites that used the same template, usually require 3rd party software to maintain, and will be rejected by most web design companies to upkeep should your shady web designer go out of business.
In the end, it's simple. As the market for Kia's has gone up and the market for BMWs has gone down over the last year, the same is true for web sites. Companies are looking for far more cost efficient solutions, and in turn are getting a lower quality product. That Kia gets you from point A to point B, but how cool do you look getting there??
